Pink Ribbon Dance

Emily (MacInnes) Somers, created, directed and choreographed this in Portland for her Medline glove division as a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness. This was all her idea to help promote their new pink gloves. I don't know how she got so many hospital employees, doctors and patients to participate, but it started to really catch on and they all had a lot of fun doing it. When the video gets 1 million hits, Medline will be making a huge contribution to the hospital, as well as offering free mammograms for the community. Please check it out. How to Hold A Home Photo Shoot

With all our new personalized products that you can put your own photo on, now it's very valuable to learn how to set up your own photo shoot. This is also a very useful skill for those who create scrapbooking layouts using their own photos. Here's how to do it!

Plan a few days in advance so you'll have time to put it all together.

First decide what kind of shoot you’d like to have. If you live near the ocean it could be a beach photo shoot or if you are near mountains, plan a mountain picnic photo shoot. Choose to hold your shoot somewhere your subjects can have fun. Outside on a clear day is ideal but inside your home with the lights on can work as well.

Gather some props such as brightly colored hats, plastic buckets, baskets, fresh or artificial flowers, colored and striped umbrellas, fabrics, blankets, gift wrap, masks, various party decorations and even some brightly colored candy to reward your kids (you can get some shots of them eating it). Consider borrowing some other props from neighbors, parents etc. Think creatively to come up with unique props all your own or look at professional photos to get some ideas.

Have your digital camera ready and be sure to have extra batteries on hand. Set the camera to the highest resolution so you will have photos suitable to use on personalized products or to enlarge for scrapbooking layouts. If you tend to wobble when you take photos, use a tripod, borrow one if you need to. Chances are that someone you know already has one.

Ask your subjects to dress in neutrals or in solids. These both compliment the person better and allow most of the bright colors to come from the props and surroundings. By doing this, you'll be able to expand usable shots. If you are holding your shoot at home, ask everyone bring an extra top to wear such as a sweat shirt, jacket, shirt etc. More variations give you more usable photos that don't appear to have been taken all at once. For the same reason, vary your props constantly as you shoot your subjects chatting, playing, and hanging out. Catch your subjects eating or doing whatever other activities you have planned for them. You can hang some fabric, wrapping paper, colorful sheets etc on the walls, from a countertop in your home (for small children) and in various places and take photos of your subjects standing in front of them.

Now that you have the basic idea, expand and add more ideas of your own. What about having a joint pretend birthday bash for all the neighborhood kids, letting all the kids take a turn at being the star? Invite pre-teens to pretend that you are filming them in their own music video, and while they are having fun, snap away. Invite the other Moms and Dads to bring their cameras as well. If possible, join the kids and ask a friend to take some snaps of you together. Remember that your time will be limited if you are working with young children, when they are tired or bored switch to another activity or wait for another day to get more shots. This way a good time will be had by all and the kids will look forward to the next photo shoot.

Having your own photo shoot once or twice a year can yield lots of high resolution personal photos you can enjoy for years and use in your scrapbooking layouts, or use on our personalized photo products.
